October 31. We arrived Veresti afternoon. The teacher tells me this morning at dawn, he could hardly hypnotize me, and all I could say was "dark and quiet." Is now out, buying a carriage and horses; said later try to buy more horses, so that we can change them on the road. We still have seventy miles to go. The landscape is beautiful and very interesting if we were in different circumstances, how lovely it would look all that! If Jonathan and I were to travel alone in these parts, what a pleasure it would be! Might say, we would see people, learn something about it and we would fill our minds with all the picturesque and colorful wild and beautiful countrysideso and as unique individuals. But, alas ...!
later. Dr. Van Helsing has returned. Got the carriage and horses, go out to dinner, and we will take the trip within one hour. The home is preparing us a huge basket of provisions, appears to be sufficient for a whole company of soldiers. The teacher encourages her and says in a whisper that it may take a week before we can return to obtain food. He has also been shopping, and has sent home a marvelous array of coats and furs and all sorts of warm clothes. We will not have any danger of feeling cold.
Soon we will go. I fear to think what can happen, indeed, are in the hands of God, only He knows what he can
